WF’s Little Duos, at the moment looking for mirabelles

So, Burnside, so, Balvenie, blended or not, solely the official papers would possibly know. We all the time get pleasure from tasting them, with their notes of mirabelle plum and quince which are so… properly, Balvenie. Particularly since these Burnsides have usually not undergone any ending or in-cask mixing with peated whisky, and so on.

The choosing of mirabelles, engraving, Artwork Deco, 1914

Burnside 28 yo 1994/2022 (48%, Whisky Age, blended malt, hogshead, cask #5135, 224 bottles)

Burnside 28 yo 1994/2022 (48%, Whisky Age, blended malt, hogshead, cask #5135, 224 bottles) Four stars and a half

A really charming little Beethoven by the artist MasonYin, which jogs my memory a little bit of Sempé. Color: white wine. Nostril: pears, apples, mirabelles, and peaches at first, then quince, vanilla cream, and a slight earthy be aware of forest after the rain. One can not assist however consider white wine, certainly. Let’s say a southern Burgundy, like a Mâconnais. Very stunning nostril, easy and mild. Mouth: excellent, reasonably taut, with white peach, greengages, quince, and lemon. Not a lot so as to add, it is a considerably minimalist fashion and maybe not very Beethovenian, however it’s very stunning. End: medium size however with a vanilla that turns into extra outstanding. Then zest and chilly inexperienced tea for a really refreshing end. A tiny little bit of salty liquorice, within the Dutch fashion, of which we might devour twelve kilos a day (if we did not maintain again). Feedback: a bit of jewel of freshness and easy class. Ode to Pleasure, maybe? All these 1994s are actually superb.

SGP:651 – 89 factors.

Sideburn 31 yo 1992+1993/2024 (51.3%, Whisky Sponge, 404 bottles) Five stars

Proper, sideburn, so Burnside, received it? So, Balvenie. Color: gold. Nostril: we’re nearer to Balvenie’s DNA, in fact, this might have been an official Balvenie of the identical age, with all its attributes. Apricot tarte, tarte tatin, quince jelly, mirabelle jam, acacia honey, vanilla custard and all that. I needn’t say extra. With water: notes of ‘a stroll within the woods’, a drop of rainwater, some nougat, a tiny coconut ball, some damaged branches, liquorice wooden… Mouth (neat): creamy, with Earl Gray tea, rooibos tea, vanilla cream, cédrat liqueur, quince paste, inexperienced lemon juice (in tiny however noticeable portions), a small piece of vanilla fudge… It’s humorous, it’s wealthy and exact on the identical time. With water: it’s a Balvenie more true than nature, with extra white pepper and tea. And a few tiny notes of sawdust and recent vanilla (pods), then the quinces return with just a few touches of recent eau-de-vie, like kirsch. This time I don’t actually discover mirabelles, reasonably a little bit of grated lemon zest and banana peel. End: a bit extra natural and with oolong tea. Grapefruit liqueur within the aftertaste. Feedback: in the identical league because the Whisky Age, maybe only a tad extra advanced. Perhaps that’s the multi-vintage ‘à la Sponge’ impact.

SGP:661 – 90 factors.
