Wine of the Week NZ – The Actual Assessment

Siren The Magician Sous Voile 2021, Marlborough, NZD $80

Winemaker Ashleigh Barrowman honed her craft working vintages in Europe, and this wine particularly is impressed by her time within the Jura. Biodynamic fruit from the Wrekin Winery within the Southern Valleys kinds the premise of this electrical wine. Sous voile (underneath veil) is the time period used within the Jura for wines which age underneath a movie of flor yeast much like what one encounters in Jerez. On this case it implies that this wine—only a single barrel—was allowed to age underneath flor for 3 years with out being topped up.

Burnished gold. Densely layered, complicated nostril with each developed nutty, butterscotch aromas and recent, pure floral talcum. Fascinating. The palate may be very concentrated with yuzu, inexperienced olive, butterscotch, lemon verbena and chamomile flavours injected onto a powerfully pushed but airy-light palate which makes use of phenolics and acidity to create the phantasm of house. All the things comes right down to land on the lengthy, saline, pithy and stony end. Iconoclastic and spectacular. (Cork)
